Bone Marrow Stem Cells

One of the ways in which healing is brought about in infants, children and adults is the mobilization of stem cells from the bone marrow. Once liberated these stem cells enter the circulation, are attracted to the injury or disease site by specific biochemical signals these tissues produce, and then engraft, multiply and become various kinds of somatic (body) cells that provide support and encourage healing & restoration. However, many medical conditions and diseases as well as aging can undermine or blunt this natural mechanism resulting in too few stem cells being mobilized (Older folks tend to have devitalized stem cells in their marrow to boot.) Dr. Steenblock  came up with a deceptively simple but highly effective solution: He began harvesting stem cell rich bone marrow from young people with cerebral palsy and giving it back to them, which flooded their tissues with all kinds of stem cells including a very biological versatile class of stem cells called mesenchymals (He has done over 1,000 whole bone marrow transplants since 2005.) He also came up with ways to purge any less-than-robust stem cells from the bone marrow, a process that actually prods the marrow to produce new, very vital stem cells (which can then be harvested and used)!

Bone Marrow Stem Cells and Growth Factors

Now, while some of the stem cells released into a patient’s circulation promote healing by virtue of the fact they engraft and become Stem Cellsvarious kinds of cells, there is another aspect to their “neuro-friendly” activity: Namely, BM stem cells produce a host of powerful proteins called growth factors that actually stimulate stem cells in the brain to become new neurons! One of these is bone morphogenic protein 2 (BMP2). You can read a technical abstract on this just click this link. Other studies have shown that bone marrow produces more BMP2 than other sources such as cells in the peripheral blood.  So, bottom line — bone marrow stem cells are actually very “neuro-friendly” on many levels. This is underscored by the great clinical results Dr. Steenblock has seen in CP patients he has treated using their own stem cell-rich bone marrow.

One of the beneficiaries of a whole bone marrow transplant is Emily, a young lady who was limited in many ways prior to her treatment. She shared the benefits she saw following her treatment in an interview which you can view by clicking this link.
